The Beginner's Guide to Vegan Toner and Learn How To Make One

What is a vegan toner?

A vegan toner is a quick fix to:

  • rehydrate your skin
  • balance pH and
  • keeps it fresh

A vegan toner is made from plant materials. It is water-based, gentle and suitable for sensitive skin unless stated otherwise.

Some toners in the market are:

  • fragranced and non-fragranced
  • contains alcohol and alcohol-free
  • some toners aim at a specific problem such as acne or blemishes

Why use vegan toner?

A toner can replenish moisture onto your skin and also does other things like:

  • prevents pimple and acne
  • removes dead skin cells
  • brightens complexion

Depending on the nature of its formulation and objectives, I highly recommend using a plant-based toner as part of your skincare routine.

How to use a toner?

It is very easy to use a toner. You can either use a facial pad or cotton wool.

Pour the toner onto the pad or wool and swipe your skin outwards. Use a new facial pad or wool and repeat.

When to use toner?

A toner is best used right after you have cleansed your face.

Unlike exfoliators and facial scrubs, you can use toner on a daily basis. It will not strip moisture off your skin, leaving it raw and dry.

If you are using serum or a moisturizer, applying toner first helps to prep the skin.

Do not confuse Toner with Micellar Water and Astringent. They have different purposes.

What is the difference between a Toner and a Micellar Water?

A micellar water:

  • is considered a mild cleanser
  • contains small amounts of surfactants to remove makeup
  • does not restore pH balance

Both Micellar Water and Toner are gentle to the skin and suitable to use on a daily basis.

What is the difference between a Toner and an Astringent?

An astringent helps to:

  • removes excess oils
  • prevent acne from forming
  • tightens pores

Astringents benefit people with oily and acne-prone skin.

An astringent may not be:

  • gentle to your skin
  • can cause stinging effects
  • does not restore pH balance
  • can be too drying

Usually Astringents contain Denatured Alcohol.

Who should use Toner?

Everyone can use a toner, regardless whether it's a vegan toner or an organic one!

My 2nd daughter loves to use skincare and makeup so after she cleanses her face, I ensure she uses a toner so that her skin remains soft and hydrated.
